Older buildings and tall trees line this otherwise quiet back street. A bright orange vent tube snakes into the manhole along with black hoses attached to an air compressor. A MDC (Metropolitan District Commission) foreman descends into the manhole. INT. THE SEWERS - SAME The foreman makes his way down the ancient sewer toward the sound of the jackhammers. Harsh electric lights light his way. Two MDC men are punching a large hole in the side of the sewer pipe. The foreman makes a cut throat gesture and the men cease their hammering. FOREMAN What the fuck are you clowns doing! You're supposed to fix this place, not make more holes! WORKER 1 We found somethin'! WORKER 2 Somethin' really weird! FOREMAN Like what? The workers point into the dark hole before them. The foreman pulls a flashlight and shines it into the hole. A room looms beyond. INT. DARK ROOM - SAME The foreman steps into the room followed by the two workers. Flashlights reveal a dusty crypt. In the middle of the room is a marble vase on top of a pedestal. It contains a single, ancient rose. The foreman strides to the opposite wall. He splashes light on the wall. One headstone is embedded in the wall. INSERT - THE HEADSTONE, which reads in gothic letters: CORWIN. WORKER 1 This guy ain't got no last name? FOREMAN This is fucking wonderful! WORKER 2 What!? FOREMAN We're already behind schedule and now I gotta report this. The fucking Historical Society is going to be down here, the Archeological Society, the Boston Preservation Society and every other fucking ivory tower schmuck who wants to write a freakin' thesis! WORKER 1 We could cement it back up. The foreman looks at him like he's an idiot. FOREMAN I'm not going to get fired over the hole you morons opened up... Let's get out of here. It's quitin' time. The three men leave the crypt. A lone beam of light pierces the hole and illuminates Corwin's name. EXT. BOSTON CITY STREETS - NIGHT A well dressed, older woman walks the streets alone. A mist clings to the ground. The street lights seem dim. She passes an alley. Eyes blink in the darkness. They follow her progress. The woman shivers. She looks around but sees nothing. She passes another alley. A shadow grabs her from behind, covers her mouth. She struggles as she is dragged into the darkness of the alley. The hand that covers her mouth pulls her head to the side to expose her neck. Under the shadow of a wide brimmed hat an evil smile exposes fanged canines. They plunge. A psychic, not physical scream, pierces the night. INT. THE DARKNESS - SAME Another pair of luminescent eyes open in otherwise absolute darkness. INT. Shoulder length black hair frames a, pale but handsome, face. He wears a loose fitting white shirt, black pants and boots. His garb belongs to the turn of this century. He stretches with a satisfying growl. He spies a sporty looking automobile at the side of the street. He moves gracefully beside the machine and gently caresses it. In the end he tasted very sweet. Punk 3 drops the old man he's been beating on. The three look at each other quizzically. PUNK 2 What's that supposed to mean? Tasted sweet? You some kind of fag? CORWIN Am I a cigarette? I don't understand. PUNK 3 This clown is on Mars. PUNK 2 Mars, hell, it's all the same. Punk 2 pumps three rounds into Corwin's chest. Corwin staggers back in shock. He looks in disbelief at the three holes there. The holes seal. CORWIN Ow. With superhuman speed Corwin moves. He snatches the gun from Punk 2's hand. Corwin rolls the gun over to examine it quizzically. The punks retreat in horror. CORWIN A revolver? No. There is no cylinder. Corwin experiments by pumping the rest of the clip into Punk 1 and Punk 3. CORWIN Fifteen rounds!!! Oh, how man constantly refines his tools of destruction. What other splendid mysteries await me in this new age? Corwin turns to Punk 2. He is frozen with fear. CORWIN So, Beater of Old Men. Shooter of the Unarmed. Do you know what I call you? PUNK 2 (through chattering teeth) No. CORWIN Dinner. Punk 2 screams as Corwin dives on him. EXT. BOSTON CITY STREETS - LATER THAT NIGHT Corwin walks the streets of the Beacon Hill section of Boston. He stops to caress a mailbox. He walks. A car zooms by. He stares after it in awe. He spies a parked Porsche and glides over to it. CORWIN Why do you not move like your brethren? What manner of machine are you? Corwin pushes it. The car alarm goes off. Corwin leaps back ten feet in fear. He covers his ears. CORWIN Silence metal beast! You do my immortal hearing harm! The Porsche, obviously, ignores him. Corwin leaps back at the car. He effortlessly flips it over. CORWIN I said, silence! The Porsche continues to scream, upside down. Corwin rolls it a few more times. It goes silent. The alternative refrains of Soundgarten's, "Spoon Man" pierce the night air. Corwin starts to the sound of this music. CORWIN What strange music. Corwin fills his chest with the night air. The music obviously turns him on. CORWIN What beautiful music! Corwin begins to cavort and contort. He leaps ten feet in the air in time to the music. She wears a long, thick jean jacket to protect her from the fall cold. She looks up into the tree in front of her. Corwin does a triple somersault just over the treetop. He lands gracefully in front of Susie. Susie's eyes go wide. She smiles. SUSIE Cool!!! How'd you do that. Corwin dances like a madman in front of her. She's amused. She clicks the Walkman. The music stops. Corwin stops. He spins about looking for the music. Wide eyed, he turns to Susie. CORWIN You made this music! I heard it through you. SUSIE Not me Silly- She holds the Walkman up to Corwin. SUSIE Soundgarten. I must've been listening to it real loud if you could hear it. Corwin takes the Walkman gently. Susie removes the earphones. He rolls it over examining it like a child. SUSIE It's a Walkman. You've never seen a Walkman? You're not from around here are you? CORWIN Not true my lady. I have lived here hundre-, many years. SUSIE Then how come you don't know what a Walkman is? CORWIN I have been away for a while. Ah, I see. The sound comes out here- Corwin traces the lines of the Walkman CORWIN then travels down here and comes out here. What makes it perform? Susie gently, coyly, places the headphones on Corwin's head. She pops the play button. Corwin screams in agony and rips the headphones off. He grabs his ears in pain. SUSIE Jeezz, I guess it was too loud. It's got a volume control. CORWIN My ears! Arrrggggg! Susie is obviously flattered and scared. SUSIE What do you mean? CORWIN There is too much for me to assimilate by myself. Things have changed faster than I ever thought imaginable. I need your help. SUSIE What do you mean changed? I don't know what you're talking about. CORWIN I need you to teach me of this time, Susie. She gives him a funny look. SUSIE You been in some kind of coma or something. Corwin stares at her intently and begins to laugh. CORWIN Yes! That's it! I'm a (begins to sing) Coma, coma, coma, coma, coma, comaleon. SUSIE That's Karma Chameleon. CORWIN Ah yes, Karma Chameleon, that's what I plucked from your mind. SUSIE Plucked from my mind? Corwin dances over to her. He holds her face, gently between his hands. CORWIN Your mind is open to me, Susie. In that vast wealth of knowledge I also spy the desires of a girl about to become a woman. May I escort you down that path? SUSIE You mean you want to hook up? Corwin smiles. CORWIN Yes, I want to hook up. Corwin slowly bends. They exchange a breathtaking kiss. Susie staggers back. Regains her breath. She smiles, then blushes. SUSIE I don't even know you. CORWIN But that's the adventure. SUSIE Adventure? CORWIN Coming to know me. Susie thinks about this. She smiles. SUSIE You like my music. CORWIN It fills me with boundless energy. INT. SUSIE'S BEDROOM - NEAR MORNING Susie sleeps alone. Corwin approaches her from behind. He bends to her ear and whispers. CORWIN Susie? She stirs, smiles. She can barely move from the night's exertions. SUSIE Yes, Corwin, mmmmmmmmm. CORWIN Does this building have a basement? SUSIE Yes, Corwin. CORWIN Is it secure from the light? SUSIE Huh? CORWIN Does it have any windows? SUSIE I don't know. Maybe a couple of small ones. Corwin speaks to himself. CORWIN I just know I'm going to get sunburned again. SUSIE What? CORWIN What may I cover these windows up with? Susie moans/frowns from the effort of thought. SUSIE I don't know. There's some cardboard under the sink and some tape in the drawer next to it. Corwin stands. CORWIN Tape? Tape? Is this the kind one listens to or wears? How does this help me? INT. SUSIE'S KITCHEN - SAME Corwin pulls several sheets of cardboard out of a bin labeled "RECYCLABLE". He holds it up. Plays with it. CORWIN Ah. Card-Board. Amazing. He looks out a window. Breaks it off, hesitantly. Plays with it. Smiles. CORWIN Amazing. Those clever Scots. INT. THE BASEMENT OF SUSIE'S BUILDING - MOMENTS LATER Corwin is sealing the last of the tiny basement windows with the cardboard. A ray of light streams through the window. Corwin looks at it sadly. He holds the back of his hand up to the light. He watches as his hand turns dark, then red. It smokes and finally boils. He speaks forlornly to himself. CORWIN Ah, Ra... Why have you forsaken me? Were my prayers not heartfelt? Were my sacrifices not adequate? Were the battles fought for you not bloody enough? Though you spurn me my dear God, I will always love you. With this, Corwin seals the window and all goes black. INT. SUSIE'S APARTMENT - SAME Susie enters her apartment carrying a bag of groceries. Corwin sits in a chair opposite the door. He smiles. Susie spies him. In fury she throws the groceries at him. She slams the door shut. Corwin is shocked. CORWIN (like a child) What! SUSIE You split on me! CORWIN I- SUSIE You split on me and you didn't even say good-bye! CORWIN I- Corwin stands, Susie approaches. SUSIE Schmuck! You're just like every other low life that wants a piece. She struggles, but finally succumbs. CORWIN Susie, my dearest. I was in the building all the time. SUSIE You were? CORWIN In the basement. Remember, I asked you about the basement? SUSIE Yeah... Sort of. Why the basement? (defiant) Isn't my bed good enough for you? CORWIN (sighs) There is no other place I would rather sleep, Lover, but there is too much light in your room. SUSIE Too much light? Corwin pulls back a sleeve and reveals a pale arm. CORWIN Look at my skin. I am heliophobic. I suffer a rare disease. The slightest kiss by the sun, and I am in agony. SUSIE My poor baby. Why didn't you tell me? CORWIN It is my deepest regret. Corwin turns to a window. CORWIN I miss his embrace so much. Susie gives him a funny look. SUSIE His? CORWIN Ra... The sun. SUSIE Oh. Him. Corwin turns back to Susie. CORWIN There is much to do now. I have accounts to reactivate. Homes to furnish. You must assist me in all this. SUSIE Accounts? Homes? What are you talking about? CORWIN The lubrication of the capitalistic system. The grease which moves this great machine. SUSIE Money? CORWIN Yes, money. SUSIE You have money? Corwin laughs. CORWIN You thought me the vagabond, didn't you? SUSIE You didn't buy me a single drink at Spit. CORWIN Dearest, when we are done these next few days, you will be bathing in champagne. Susie smiles, but does not believe. SUSIE You're just teasing me. CORWIN Unfortunately, the banks will be closed at this hour. SUSIE Not on Friday. Most of them are open until seven thirty. CORWIN Take these back to the apartment. I will join you later. SUSIE I thought you were hungry? CORWIN I am, but due to the nature of the condition I told you about, I require a special diet. SUSIE I can wait. I'll go with you. Corwin's eyes burn. A sneer plays along his lips. CORWIN Go home, Susie. I will take you out for the most elegant dinner of your life... later. Would that it were that simple, Julia. CINDY Who are you? How do you know who we are? STRANGER(V.O.) A monster has awakened. He is in our midst. You have dreamt of him and seen his terror. DAN He's a fucking vampire! STRANGER(V.O.) Crudely put, but true. JULIA That's impossible! There's no such thing. They're just dreams! CARL Then how come we're all havin' the same dream? DAN No shit. I've made a bundle on my dreams. A couple of times they've saved my ass, too. I make a habit of payin' attention to them, Lady. STRANGER(V.O.) And best you do, best you all do, for this dark creature desires all of your blood. CARL Say what? AGATHA Why? STRANGER(V.O.) You are all the seventh sons of the seventh sons, or daughters as the case may be. JULIA How do you know that? STRANGER(V.O.) (chuckles) Technology and some very large databases. AGATHA What does our ancestry have to do with this creature? STRANGER(V.O.) Your ancestry affords you all great psychic power. I am sure you are all well aware of your own abilities.. JULIA What's that got to do with this psycho? STRANGER(V.O.) By consuming you he consumes your power and becomes stronger. CARL Give me a break. STRANGER(V.O.) There were seven of you. I believe you all dreamt of Rick Jardane's fate last night. Was it pleasant? A stony silence. AGATHA Who is this monster? STRANGER (V.O.) He has had many names through the ages, Cornelius, Augustus, Cornwall, Louis, Varchone. CINDY What do you want from us? STRANGER (V.O.) To help me trap him and finish him for good. GAIL And if we refuse? The Stranger chuckles. STRANGER (V.O.) We could have a seance and discuss the matter with Rick Jardane. I think you know what his opinion would be. CINDY What can we do? STRANGER (V.O.) You can track him with your abilities. DAN And then drive a stake through his fucking heart! CARL Right on! STRANGER (V.O.) That would sufficiently annoy him. CARL (gulp) Annoy? STRANGER (V.O.) We must remove his head and burn everything else. Gloria starts to faint. Carl catches her. GLORIA I don't feel so good. STRANGER (V.O.) Steel yourselves, Friends. This is the only way. You have the power to do this. JULIA What do you mean? STRANGER (V.O.) Think carefully of what I have said. I will contact you later for your decision. CINDY But you still haven't told us who you are. The chair is obviously empty. INT. EIGHTEENTH CENTURY BOUDOIR - NIGHT Julia stands before a table mirror dressed in beautiful eighteenth century garb. She moves to one side, and Corwin is reflected in the mirror staring longingly at her. A marble vase sits on the dresser. It contains a single red rose. A waltz emanates from an open door. I will never let you go again. Again they merge. They part. Julia weeps. JULIA You're scaring me. How can you know all of this? CORWIN It gets back to your beliefs, Sweet Love. You take for granted your telepathy which most mortals consider the strangest magic. Yet you falter at reincarnation. Trust your dreams. JULIA Everything you told me is true? CORWIN Everything. JULIA You dreamed it? Corwin replies with a smile. They continue their walk. Julia looks at him curiously, but ignores the smile. JULIA So did the young officer reveal your secret? SUSIE I don't have to be psychic to know a line when I hear one. VARCHONE A line? Maybe, but also true. SUSIE And what did you expect to find in my mind. VARCHONE I expected nothing. I hoped to find you attracted to me. Susie looks Varchone over again. SUSIE I find you very attractive, but I'm already hooked up. VARCHONE What a lucky man. He must think the world of you. SUSIE He does. VARCHONE And is he as handsome as you are beautiful? Susie smiles again. SUSIE He's very handsome. Very romantic, too. VARCHONE And what would this romantic young man's name be? SUSIE Corwin. Varchone smiles an evil smile. VARCHONE I thought as much. SUSIE You know him? VARCHONE I thought I would never see him again. We separated in Europe years ago. VARCHONE Pathetic, Immortal Fool. For all your strength and all your powers, you shall always be on you knees before me. Susie screams as Varchone runs her through. Corwin screams. CORWIN No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Varchone smiles as he lets Susie's body slip to the ground. He bounces the tip of his saber up and down. VARCHONE And now it is your turn, Corwin. VARCHONE You leave your little mortal friends to do what you can not, Corwin? CARL Who's Corwin? Varchone looks confused. VARCHONE Do not play with me Mortal. I have no time for such games. GAIL You're going to pay for what you did to Cindy. VARCHONE Cindy? Varchone smiles, then laughs. VARCHONE Ah yes! Cindy! The little psychic I had for dinner the other day. Agatha looks horrified. VARCHONE Poor little Cindy Lou who. A tasty morsel what? Who's next? JULIA Why don't you try me shithead? Julia steps through the hole that Varchone and Corwin made. Varchone steps back in shock. Disbelief is written across his face. VARCHONE Julia! It is not possible! The dark stranger's voice booms from his dais. STRANGER Possible, Varchone? What do you know of what is possible. Your petty mind can comprehend nothing but the execution of petty little evils. Varchone turns to the dais. Varchone is unnerved. VARCHONE Who are you. Whose mind is closed to me! Show yourself. Corwin steps from the shadows. DAN That's the other vampire. The humans, other than Julia, become unnerved. CORWIN You woke me from a sound sleep, Varchone. The psychics scream when you steal their blood. VARCHONE When I steal their power! CORWIN And what has it brought you? Tens of thousands have filled my veins! Corwin turns to Carl. CORWIN Are you impressed? Carl shrugs like it is no big deal. Varchone fumes. VARCHONE And what of you Corwin? What great contribution have you made to the cosmos. You, who are centuries older than I. CORWIN Centuries? More like millennia, Varchone. Varchone staggers at the statement. CORWIN I remain humble before God, Varchone. Something you could never possibly understand. My work is best done in the shadows. VARCHONE Oh please! Noble Immortal, you deal in death just as I. CORWIN You pollute the world. I attempt to beautify it by exorcising its human cancers. Varchone sneers. VARCHONE Such pathetic justification. You claim humility, yet you do not hesitate to play the part of judge, jury and executioner. By what right do you wear these robes? CORWIN You know my powers, Varchone, better than anyone. I can see the evil in men's minds. They confess of their own accord whether they mean to or not. Varchone snorts in disgust. He looks around him. VARCHONE So I see you have taken to hiding behind the skirts of mortals, Corwin. Are the years catching up with you? CORWIN They are about to catch up with you, Varchone. I knew you would seek these mortals out to satisfy your gross appetites. Like a moth to the flame, you came. VARCHONE And so you fantasize that this little coven will be my undoing? Varchone sweeps his arms about him. VARCHONE And this one, Corwin, the spitting image of Julia. I think I will have her heart this night also. JULIA You can try, shithead, but I was planning on having your head. Varchone laughs out loud. VARCHONE Oh, she is sweet. I rather like her sense of humor. Varchone begins to burn in earnest. VARCHONE No!!!!!!! Julia walks over and grabs Varchone's fallen sword. She looks down the length of it and the sword erupts into fire. She calmly walks over to the burning Varchone. JULIA I believe I owe you this from a previous life. She swings with fury. Varchone's flaming head separates from his body and his headless body explodes. The mortals shield themselves from the flying, flaming vampire bits. The darkness returns to the room. Corwin is silhouetted against the window framing Boston harbor. Julia notices him. She drops the sword. JULIA You used us. You used all of us to get at him. CORWIN I joined you to destroy him. Had I not, you would all be dead, and he would have been that much stronger. JULIA Why all the games? Why didn't you just kill him yourself. CORWIN Varchone has eluded me for over two hundred years. His power grew very quickly. A long time ago he learned how to hide his mind from me. Then a hundred years ago I underestimated him and he almost killed me. I was burned very badly. It took me that long to recuperate... In the end I did what I thought had to be done. AGATHA And Cindy is dead. CORWIN And thousands of others, Mother. Some of them very dear to me. The killing is at an end. DAN Is it? You're still around. You're just like him. JULIA (desperate) No! He's not like that animal. CARL He's a freakin' vampire, Julia, he has to go. CORWIN What are you saying. DAN We're saying you gotta go. CORWIN (angry) I have saved you! JULIA He's right you can't just... Gloria grabs Julia and pulls her out of the way. Corwin is there. He drops down onto her with a vengeance. Julia screams in terror. Corwin has landed so that she is caged by his limbs. Corwin mockingly screams as loud as she does. Corwin rolls off of Julia. He laughs until tears stream down his face. Julia stares at him in disbelief. CORWIN (through laughter) I got you so good!!!!!! JULIA You're alive! Corwin takes a few seconds to regain his composure. CORWIN It would seem so, Lady. Corwin tickles Julia and she screams. This time she smiles. JULIA But how! I saw you engulfed in flame! Blown out a window! Corwin looks at her like she's an idiot. CORWIN Blown out to where? JULIA (realization) Boston Harbor. CORWIN Why do you think waterfront property is so expensive? Location, location, location. JULIA You planned it this way! CORWIN I knew Agatha, Dan and the rest would turn on me. Houdini would have been proud of my escape. JULIA You knew? Or do you mean you planted these thoughts in their heads. CORWIN (smiles) I couldn't have these mortals with, their new found powers, worrying about another vampire loose in the world. JULIA What about me? Corwin pulls close. CORWIN I knew you couldn't live without me. Julia smiles. JULIA You're so vain. CORWIN An affliction that comes with profound age. JULIA (teasing) I don't know, Corwin. I don't know about living with one of the undead. CORWIN Yuk! I hate that term. I prefer the near living. JULIA Well, I guess I owe you at least one lifetime. Varchone cut my last one short. Corwin grabs her for a passionate kiss. CORWIN You can't blame him his jealousy, really. He was consistent right up until the end. Kiss. JULIA Consistent. Kiss. CORWIN Yes. He lost his head over you. Laughter, music and roll the credits. The end?
